Designing Metalwork for Coastal Homes

Coastal architecture asks more of metalwork. Salt-laden air, wind and exposed positions make material choices and detailing as important as appearance.

Designing Metalwork for Coastal Homes

Begin with the environment

A sheltered courtyard and an exposed ocean-facing balcony are very different conditions. The position of the piece, prevailing weather and access for future maintenance should all inform the specification before fabrication begins.

Choose finishes as part of the design

Galvanising, powder coating and appropriate stainless-steel grades can each play a role. The best choice depends on the setting, the desired visual character and how the different materials in the building meet one another.

Detail for longevity

Good coastal metalwork avoids unnecessary water traps, allows for drainage and makes inspection and maintenance practical. These quiet decisions help a balustrade, gate or pergola retain its architectural clarity over time.
