The Staircase as Architecture

A staircase is circulation, structure and furniture at the same time. When it is visible from the main living spaces, every junction contributes to the architecture.

The Staircase as Architecture

Proportion comes first

Comfortable rise and going dimensions establish the rhythm of the stair. The available opening, landing positions and lines of movement need to be resolved before the visual details can work properly.

Structure can feel light

Steel makes it possible to carry significant loads with a restrained profile. Open risers, carefully positioned stringers and slender balustrades can preserve light and sightlines without making the staircase feel fragile.

Materials should belong together

Timber treads, steel supports and glass or metal balustrades should read as one assembly. Repeated lines, consistent junctions and a limited material palette usually create the calmest result.
